MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS WHO OPPOSE THE CHARTER
Hi, I'm Jim Pistrang
My wife, Barbara, and I have lived in Amherst for nearly 30 years. Our children are successful graduates of Fort River, ARMS and ARHS, and our family has treasured our time in Amherst. I am active in Town Government, serving as Town Moderator for the past 5 years and as a Town Meeting member for many years prior. Barbara and I are very active in Amherst Community Theater (come see Beauty and the Beast in January!) and I have been coaching Ultimate Frisbee at the Middle School since 1994. I love the town of Amherst for its spirit of activism and volunteerism. I oppose this charter because it removes checks and balances, and because the proposed structure of concurrent 2-year terms for all elected officials is ill-advised. Our town is well-governed, with stable finances and great town employees. Town Meeting is a precious tradition that I am reluctant to throw away without first attempting to improve it. I had hoped that the charter commission would consider this option more seriously.
